Text-to-Speech for Web Novels: How It Works

Text-to-speech, or TTS, means software reads written text aloud in a synthetic voice. That part is simple. The interesting question is how you point it at a web novel, which is not a neat file sitting on your phone but a page, or a chain of pages, on the open web.

Why web novels are a special case

An audiobook is a finished recording. An EPUB is a self-contained file. A web novel is neither. It is a series of chapter pages on a site like freewebnovel.com or novelfull.com, wrapped in menus, comments, and ads, and it keeps growing as the author posts more. To listen to one, an app has to do two jobs a plain file reader never has to: find the story text on the page, and know where the next chapter is.

The steps behind the play button

When a web novel TTS app works well, here is what is happening after you paste a link:

• Fetch. The app loads the chapter page.
• Extract. It separates the actual chapter text from the navigation, ads, and comments around it.
• Speak. A neural voice reads the cleaned text aloud, at your chosen speed.
• Advance. When the chapter ends, it follows the "next chapter" link and starts again, with no tap from you.

TTS versus narration
